Hi,

This read-only file system and vc respawn problem is the exact same issue I
got when I recompiled e2fsprogs.

It is not directly related to the kernel rebuild as I am running a 2.4.19
preempt kernel without a problem once I placed a hold on e2fsprogs.

Someone made a comment that it might be related to init or something.
Something is definitely breaking the file system after a recompile of
e2fsprogs and its dependancy init.

I wasnt able to get the file system to work as root with any kernel. But
could mount it fine, so I was thinking that it seems to be more init related
than file system itself.

Anyway, that is my stupid thoughts for the day

i too have this problem with new kernels, only i have several routes to
follow to check it out. i noticed the other posters recommendations
about single-user mode, etc. but i still have some questions. i want to
test the JFS which is included in AC's patches, or Marcelo's 2.4.20pre5.
i notice that there are now 2 ways of building the kernel for a Promise
Fastrak TX2, however, apparently AC did something that breaks the
atapi/ide chain
(http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=linux.k
ernel.Pine.LNX.4.10.10207111021450.16921-100000%40master.linux-ide.org&rnum=
1&prev=/groups%3Fq%3Dlinux%2Bkernel%2B2.4.19%2Bpromise%2Bfastrak%2Bpdc20270%
26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DG%26scoring%3Dd)

, the result being that in addition to the problems you mention above, i
first get 'mount - special device not found,' or some such shit. mount
for an msdos partition fails, as does the RAID partition. has anyone
else seen this? details for JFS can be found here :
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/oss/jfs/index.html

i posted to one of the kernel mailing lists (mlist.linux.kernel) cuz
thats where groups.google pointed me to when i searched for this problem
(above link). if anyone has any information about running a TX2 with a
kernel that supports JFS, let me know what promise modules you used. my
2.4.18 was built with experimental support and works fine, newer kernels
have a seperate section for promise PDC20265-70 chipsets, and seperate
sections for fastrak support.

thanks
john burke
