using cups I have encountered this problem many many times. (on sourcemage)
I have gotten it to print *sometimes*. Mine is an HP deskjet, using the USB connection though. I haven't been able to figure it out either.

Has anyone had any luck setting up printing in Sourcemage. I've been
working primarily with cups, but have tried gnulpr with no more
success. I have all the proper modules loaded.

parport_pc 22024 1 (autoclean)
lp 6272 0 (autoclean)
parport 25664 1 (autoclean) [parport_pc lp]

and have changed the parallel port to /devices/printers/0 but still no
response. I can't even print a cups test page without it automatically
being cancelled.

My error-log lists it as:
I [14/Aug/2002:02:48:53 -0500] Job 8 queued on 'hpdj682c' by 'baron'.
E [14/Aug/2002:02:48:53 -0500] Unable to convert file 0 to printable
format for job 8!

I can 'cat' files directly to the port, but the printer doesn't know
what to make of the data so it seizes up moments after starting.

Any idea what I'm missing? I think I have every possible (not lpr
related) package installed, so I don't think it's a print filter.

Thanks for any advice,

I have set up with cups, via samba to my wifes windows pc and now via my nifty new SMC router/print server. Local should be easier, I would think.

Use the Cups web setup tool (http://localhost:631/) if you haven't already. There is a lot of information there.

My only complaint with cups is that it takes forever to print something on my canon, it sends the print jobs as post script. And for some reason it prints out a cover sheet, which I do NOT have selected anywhere, which may be a function of the SMC print server.

You need to have espgs installed with the new cups, that's a recent change, if you plain on using postscript. This may be a necessity for your particular printer. (that error looks similar to what I had when it became necessary.)

I also used the kde setup tool, since I use kde.
