I'm running 5.3 on a couple of X11 running desktops without any issues
after fixing a spell or two. No DEs used on them though.
I'm running 5.3 with test grimoire and over 1200 installed spells.
Haven't had any gcc-related issues in quite some time. No KDE or GNOME
here though.
I have gcc-5.3.0 plus most of kde5/plasma5 stuff - no problems
