I'm in the middle of rebuilding my systems with --as-needed and not
encountering any issues related to it thus far. I’ll provide a complete
report once it’s done, and then spin up the prometheus systems to further test
randomly. The current system is built against the master git of a few
weeks ago.
I have found one glitch, not related to –as-needed, with regards to gmp and
gawk. Gawk will use –lmpc –lgmp if it finds mpc linked against gmp
(evidenced by the configure log). Sorcery uses gawk, so when gmp is
dispelled for install, the awk commands in sorcery fail (cannot find
libgmp.blah.blah). Resurrecting gmp is the only option at this
point. This brings up a philosophical debate as to whether base
tools used by sorcery should be statically linked. Anyone that
recasts/updates gawk after libmpc/gmp are installed can run into this.

So, any takers?? The as-needed option is available in the
optimization
menu of devel sorcery. If you're willing to help out and get us to
more
recent versions of gcc, icu, libpng and xorg more quickly then please
help us test as-needed on as many spells as possible of what you have
installed.
For minimal testing, just switch the option on and continue updating
installed spells as usual, if you want to test some more rebuild some
or
all spells on your system.
Regards, Remko
