Should this be enabled by default, then? I assume by the commit that
upstream defaults to *not* using the built-in fonts.


Yes, the upstream default is to not use builtin fonts. I am not sure
about making it default since when it is enabled I believe that
external bitmap fonts will not work anymore. I am only
using ttf so it doesn't matter and it is nice to have a fall back
option.

Yup, that's why I asked. :) I'd leave it as upstream sets it.
