What concerns me is whether or not lilo will need to write to /boot, and
if so then simply running lilo -b /dev/hda -C /mnt/root/etc/lilo.conf is
out, because it would mean lilo will try to write to /boot on the ISO
and not the installed hard drive. If it doesn't need to write to /boot,
then I think this will be ok.

With respect to chrooting using lilo -r, I think that would be
equivalent to chrooting manually. However, from the man page, it seems
that lilo does not handle setting up /dev inside the chroot, so you
would have to manually mount --bind /dev /mnt/root/dev etc. before
running lilo -r. At least that's what it seems like to me from the man
page. I'll test both approaches on the iso and if they work I will
include those. If not, then we'll just go with the smgl-chroot (or users
can opt to do it manually as well of course).
