November 17, 2016
County Office-Auditorium


PRES REPORT.  Todd Walker got the meeting started at 7 PM.  He welcomed all members and guests.  IntroducedDoctor Bob Gotwals of NC School of Math and Science, our guest speakers for the evening.  He specializes in Computing Mathematical Data Models and Honey Bee Genetics.


SECRETARY.  Jamie Latimer asked everyone to please sign-in.  He requested additional information for the completion of the October minutes.  It was decided we would make the updates to the minutes and approve along with the November minutes at the January 2017 meeting.


FINANCIAL REPORT.  Amanda Blanks presented the financial report, it shows the club having a Beginning Balance of $5120.78, Monthly Income of $375.00 (PCBA\NCSBA Dues, Extractor Rental, Donation, raffle tickets) and Expenses of $1001.88 (Veterans Memorial).  Leaving an Ending Balance of $4493.90.

The club is collecting 2017 dues, $15 for NCSBA and $5 for PCBA.  Forms are available to fill out.


VP REPORT.  Whitney Barnes reported on a great Ag Day.  She plans to contact the NC State Fair about prize checks.  The club will hold it's annual Christmas Pot Luck and Naughty Santa Party.  Please bring a dish for all to share.


FUND RAISING.  Mac Blanks announced we have raised $604 from raffle tickets.  Along with $438 from t-shirt and hats. The Honey raffle took place with donations of Honey from Todd Walker, The Barnes family, Calvin Hester and Mary Dietz.  And the winner is..... Christy McCay.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH.
4-H.  Frank Hayward announced the group will be using the Indiana 4-H itinerary for beekeeping.  

FAIR BOOTH.  Kim Buchanan thanked the crew for their work on this year's 1st place booth.  Special acknowledgements to Larry, Whitney, the Savages, Mary Ann and Jim.

OLD BUSINESS. 

NEW COLOR.  The group needs to decide on a standard color for ordering "Club" versions of our PCBA tshirts...  In January.

NEW BUSINESS.
BEE SCHOOL.  Website ready to go live 11/18.  Classes will start January 12, 2017.  Costs will  be $75 per beekeeper or $125 per Beekeeping Couple.  Includes aBook, set of materials and PCBA membership.  There was a discussion about providing a discounted fee for returning students.  Various ideas and fees were discussed until it was decided that returning members couldattend for $50 per person.

COUNTRY CHRISTMAS.  Tom and Linda Savage have invited the PCBA to setup a booth at the Country Christmas celebration they are having on 11/19 from 3-7.  All are welcome to come out for a hay ride through the woods.

CASUAL ANNOUNCEMENTS. There is a  bee based board game called SWARM, you can find it at Project Neuron website. (http://projectneuron.org/games/swarm-the-honey-bee-game )...  Roxboro Community School expressed interest in keeping a hive on campus and having more involvement, such as participating in a work day...  The Walker family has a new girl in the hive, Liese Gayle Walker...  Kim's daughter got married.

HONEY BEE GENETICS.  Professor Bob Gotwals of NC School of Math and Science, presented a discussion on ways he uses math and computer science to track genetic traits in bees.  He presented some basics in genetics, leaning heavily on examples from the honey bee.  This lead up to how specific traits can be identified and measured in the colony.  Some commonly researched traits are foraging, worker sterility, suppressed reproduction of parasitic mites such as varroa and hygienic behaviors such as uncapping and removal of brood.
