Subject: Re: proposed gypsy moth treatments in Person County
Hi Lynn,
We propose to use pheromone flakes with a little glue for the mating disruption treatment. The pheromone is called disparlure and is specific only to gypsy moth. The pheromone in the flakes, which are smaller than a grain of rice, is the same one female
gypsy moths exude to attract male moths. Flakes dispensed in this treatment confuse the male gypsy moths, which cannot find the females in order to mate. With only one generation a year, gypsy moths do not reproduce and the local population crashes. This treatment
poses no risk, directly or indirectly, to honeybees or other pollinators.
I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to contact me with any more you have. I hope you can come to the public meeting to get more complete information.
Regards,
Chris Elder NCDA&CS GM and EAB Program Manager
Chris,
Can you tell me exactly what chemicals will be proposed for aerial use to disrupt reproduction of the gypsy moths? Person County Beekeepers are particularly interested in potential impacts on honeybees and other pollinators?
Thanks,
