Animal Welfare Approved

2014-2015 Good Husbandry Grants

AWA is seeking proposals to improve animal welfare for current AWA farms and for farms that have applied to join the free certification program. Farms may submit both a grant application and a farm application at the same time. Slaughter plants working with or seeking to work with AWA farmers are also eligible to apply for a grant. The deadline for the 2014-2015 grants cycle is October 1, 2014.

Good Husbandry Grant Highlights

  • Funding Priorities:  1) Genetics: (listed in order of priority) poultry, hog, dairy, and other ruminants; 2) Outdoor access - specifically mobile housing; 3) Welfare improvements in the slaughter process; 4) Non-lethal predator control.
  • Eligible Costs: (including but not limited to) breeding stock; contractor costs (skilled labor only—i.e., an electrician or plumber); materials; slaughter equipment; new mobile housing.

·         Deadline for Proposals: October 1, 2014.

Information about the Animal Welfare Approved certification program and food label, including standards, technical resources, and a directory of certified farms and products can be found at www.AnimalWelfareApproved.org. More information about AWA grants can be found at www.AnimalWelfareApproved.org/farmers/grants-for-farmers/.

Animal Welfare Approved audits, certifies, and supports farmers raising their animals according to the highest welfare standards, outdoors on pasture or range. Called a "badge of honor for farmers" and the "gold standard," AWA is the most highly regarded food label in North America when it comes to animal welfare, pasture-based farming, and sustainability. All AWA standards, policies and procedures are available on the AWA website, making it the most transparent certification available.

Animal Welfare Approved's Online Directory of AWA farms, restaurants and products enables the public to search for AWA farms, restaurants and products by zip code, keywords, products and type of establishment. In addition, AWA has published Food Labeling for Dummies, a regularly updated guide to commonly used food claims and terms, available free for download at www.AnimalWelfareApproved.org.
