Hi Ms. Deitz,
Hope you are doing well. I presented information about Farm Service Agency and what programs were available at a Person County Beekeepers Association meeting last year. This year the Agricultural Act of 2014 passed (commonly known as the Farm Bill), and it includes updated programs that may be of interest to honey producers. The Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honey Bees, & Farm-raised Fish Program which provides emergency relief to producers of livestock, honey bees, and farm-raised fish. This program covers losses from disaster such as disease, adverse weather or other conditions, including losses because of blizzards and wildfires not adequately covered by any other disaster program.
For honey producers, this program specifically targets losses of purchased feed, cost of additional honeybee feed purchased above normal quantities, colony losses, and hive losses. An eligible honey producer is a producer who has a risk in the honey production, pollination, or honeybee breeding operation for producing honey, pollinating, or breeding honeybees for commercial uses as part of a farming operation on the beginning date of the eligible adverse weather or other eligible loss condition. Eligible honeybees include bees housed in a managed hive and used for honey production, pollination, or honeybee breeding. Eligible honeybees do not include wild, feral honeybees, leafcutter bees or other bee species not used for producing honey, pollinating, or breeding honeybees.
The requirement to purchase insurance has been removed, however, producers applying for benefits must file a crop report of their honey and hives. Late filed crop reports are being accepted for 2014.
I encourage all your members to come to our office to register their farming operation and find out more about this program and other FSA programs that may assist them. Please pass this information along to your members. If you or any members have questions, don’t hesitate to contact me 336-599-0284 option 2.
In addition, I would like to attend your June meeting to follow up. Please let me know if this will work.
Thank you and have a wonderful day!
