Math has never been that easy for me, but it occurs to me that "many" could be that famous number (n+1) or a forerunner there to. Maybe this tribe hasn't the need to conceptualize further yet, and when the need is perceived they will move accordingly.
The test reminded me a bit of the cartoon showing one lab rat, pointing out the scientist and telling a fellow rat, "Look, I have trained him to give me food when I ring the bell."
