Aloha,

As for security...only technical risk I see is logins going clear text
over unsecured connections.

If/when using a web front end (like PHPMyAdmin), see if ibiblio will
run it secure (via SSL); that will take care of that.

For direct logins and transfers, linux/un*x users can use ssh (secure
shell) and scp (secure copy), usually built in to whatever distro
you're using.

Windoze users can use the PuTTY free telnet/ssh client, which includes
pscp, a command line secure copy client. It'a available here:

Don't be scared by the beta .52 version designation...I've been using
it regularly for over a year on my Win98 box with no troubles
whatsoever.
