One of the problems that plague many open source game programmers is the
ability to complete their project. Oftentimes the programmer will leave a
half-finished project for potential users to try out, or just an empty
SourceForge project page with no content except "Looking for more
programmers" on it. Today while exploring Slashdot I discovered this
article
(http://frogtoss.com/index.php?content=finishingafullgame&dir=journal) on
Frogtoss Games (http://frogtoss.com/) regarding the production of open
source games. It hits the nail right on the head with nearly all of the
problems that plague the games we have come to love. Ironically they
themselves have no games released at this point, but from the looks of it
they are preparing to release something soon... (hopefully it will come
true!).
As I have often said before, it's important for open source game
programmers to finish what they start, and realize that they themselves
are the ones who will be creating most of the game and its content. Many
hundreds or even thousands of project pages on SourceForge are simply
empty because the creator gave up or or forgot about what they were doing.
I'll have to go back and find the particular comment on Slashdot that
pokes fun at this particular phenomena that has arisen on SourceForge and
other open source development sites. I'll post that as soon as I can find
it... :-)
