One of the best ways to getting people to try out a new game is to have
nice screenshots of the game running. This was made even more clear on
one of the old polls that I ran back on the old website before the hack
attack. If you're playing an open source game you really enjoy, no matter
which operating system, take a screenshot of it and submit it! Some games
that come to mind are GL-117, bzflag, FreeCNC, or even Cube (if you can
find it). For some of these multiplayer games, having that screenshot
could convince just one more person to give the game a shot and get them
onto a server.
Screenshots ingame are the best, but getting a shot of a title screen too
might even help. There are plenty of screenshot programs out there for any
operating system. On Windows, I prefer using XNView (http://xnview.com/)
since it can do a whole variety of image manipulation functions.. On
Linux, a good screenshot program is most likely bundled in with your
distribution.
I've been adding some screenshots off certain project's website over the
past week or so, so the Image Gallery will continue to grow, as has the
Web Links, and even the games featured on the site (like Chess and
Frozen-Bubble). It's about time OSG went somewhere; since it's been
treading water after the hack attack in May. Thanks a bunch for anything
you submit, and remember... anyone who likes open source games to either
play or make is welcome here. The door is always open! :-)
