Dear Douglas:

What a nice surprise to hear from a long-time friend. I am getting along well, better than average for my 79 years I guess, and hope the same is true for you. You know that I still remain involved to some degree in pineapple though I have stopped doing field research as of July of last year. However, I have been encouraged to keep up with Pineapple News for as long as I can/want to but there are people who are willing to take on the task if I decide I can't or don't want to continue.

What is the status of the OPWG? Do you have regular communications and how many people are currently on the mailing list? Anything new in regards to your work on the program with growers in Mexico or on organic pineapple production in general? I was able to visit the Dole operation in Honduras and Costa Rica in late October of last year and was taken to see their large organic pineapple operation. The plants generally looked very good and they were doing a good job of adhering to good organic practices and also doing a good job of protection the soil between crops with N-fixing ground cover. Such a practice wouldn't be profitable here because we don't have the uniform distribution of rain they enjoy. I was quite impressed.

Thanks for doing the translation for your group. I just today received another translation from the organizers that seems to be more complete than the original. I will forward it to the PN mailing list.

Best regards,
Duane
