Hello Dave, Colega Ecuadoriana et. al.:
Welcome to the Organic Pineapple Working Group. Could you tell us
your name and profession (grower, rural development specialist,
extension worker etc.)?
The Organic Pineapple Mailing List was created as a means to foment
and facilitate the exchange of information among OPWG members in
relation to Organic Pineapple Production, Promotion and / or
Marketing. While referring to an external source in response to a
request for information sent to this list by a fellow OPWG colleague
may be a legitimate means of satisfying that request, any action
designed to transfer the discussion to another forum is discouraged,
as we do not intend to deviate requests made on OPWG or drain this
list of its function. Providing the information requested within
the context of OPWG fulfills the purpose for which it was created
and is encouraged.
Likewise, providing a more thorough explanation regarding the
principles involved is also encouraged. Presumably, the
microorganisms contained in the commercial products advertised on
the website Dave referred to would be helpful in combating the fungi
&/or sinfilidos (Scutigerella inmaculata) you're concerned about.
Pathogenic fungi that attack pineapple during or after harvest
include: Thielaviopsis paradoxa, Phytopthora cinamoni, Fusarium spp
& Penicillium Funniculosum.
In any case, you'll want to sterilize the surface of the wound
(where it was cut) with a natural antiseptic and seal it with
natural wax in order to avoid the entrance of pathogens.
As Dave suggests, the presence (and dominance) of beneficial
organisms such as those grown in well made compost and (better yet)
compost tea would be very helpful for diminishing or eliminating the
presence of pathogens, as the ambiente creado would not be conducive
to their growth &/or reproduction.
(I speak fluent español, por lo cual no duda en comunicarme en el
lenguage que mas le conviene).
Have you been in contact with the agricultural extension service of
Ecuador's national university &/or the Ecuadorian Secretariat of
Agriculture? They have the potential to be quite helpful, I would
think, and may take great interest in your organic pineapple
production project.
Adicionalmente, podría ser de utilidad de ponerte en contacto con un
grupo ambientalista en su país o cualquier otro nación hispano
parlante.
Later, I'll post pathogen specific cultivation methods to combat the
pathogens you mentioned.

Dave, you do have any connection with the manufacturer of the
organic soil amendment you recommended?
In any case, Ecuador's a bit far to ship something that could be
made locally, don't you think? Organic agriculture is based on
working with natural biological processes, rather than organic
amendments made by someone else, IMO.
