Your instincts and the conclusions you've reached based on your observations are very good. It doesn't sound like your colony is split-worthy at this point. That could change fairly quickly so keep an eye on it. I'll send you a preview of May 2016's article "Making Splits Without Bananas", which touches on many of these questions.
