Event Title:
2016 Mason Pharr Seminar: The HSGSA & EGSA Proudly Present - Propolis and Pollen: Two Keys to Honeybee Health

Event Date & Time:
Thursday, March 17, 2016
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Event Description:

Dr. Marla Spivak is the Distinguished McKnight University Professor in Apiculture/Social Insects at the University of Minnesota. Her research includes the benefits of propolis to honey bee health and immunity, pollinator habitat in urban landscapes, use of native forbs through identification of collected pollen, and decoding bees’ dance language. It is well known that honey bee health is in decline. Rather than focusing on all the problems facing bees, in this exciting lecture Dr. Spivak will present research on two vital resources for bees: propolis and pollen. Propolis is composed of plant resins with amazing antimicrobial properties that contribute to honey bee social immunity. Pollen is composed of proteins, lipids and other phytochemicals that support bees' nutrition and colony survivorship. Everyone can help bees by ensuring they have access to sources of resin and good clean flowers!
