Lewis When you put a queen cell into a hive with a weak laying queen do you kill the weak queen or let them sort it out? Eric From: ocba-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org [mailto:ocba-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Lewis Cauble I'm still learning, but I learned this lesson last year. I tried changing their minds by cutting out cells on a hive and giving them more room. Nothing doing. The bees are smarter and more strong willed than I am. This year with our mild winter many of the hives have gotten ahead of me again. This year I have been pulling the queens on the ones that have a notion to swarm and using those queens to requeen hives with poor patterns or doing splits in another yard. I don't know how this is going to work out either but I feel like it's a step up from cutting cells. At this point, I believe I would add a frame of eggs to your hive that you are not sure about. If they need to make a queen, they can do that with those eggs. It took me 3 or 4 years to learn to be patient with the bees. Just because they don't have a laying queen today doesn't mean they don't have a plan in motion. It's hard to walk away from a hive without eggs and trust that the bees can work it out. Many folks want to throw a queen at it. Start by giving them a frame of eggs. Give them a month or so and see if it doesn't work out. That's my 2 cents worth, and it might not even be worth that. Keep us up to date! Lewis
