Hello All,

I just wanted to share this email from the folkswho sponcered the pollinator workshop I went to a few weeks back. It had tons of great info and was a bit mind blowing. They just sent out a few links that have pollinator support to establishing a new habitat and a GREAT plant list from Debbie Roos!

I highly recommend the course next year to anyone who can make it during the week. It was worth playing "sick" to go!  I saw Don Hopkins there taking it all in.

I would also recommend you visit Chatham Market in Pittsboro (on 15-501 just before town - where Debbie has her pollinator garden) if you want to see some plants that would fit into your or a friends garden, pastures or business. Great inspirations for sure.

ENJOY!..and a super thanks to Catherine for sharing the link.

Dear Marty,

Thank you for joining us for the Pollinator Conservation Planning Short Course! We hope the day was worthwhile for you and that the resources we shared will help you better support bee-friendly farming.

Please find the PowerPoint slides from Eric’s presentations attached, along with the Pollinator Habitat Assessment and Pollinator Habitat Assessment for Organic Farms booklets, and a bee plant list from Debbie Roos (NC Cooperative Extension). There are also a number of NC or regionally oriented helpful links on Debbie Roos’ Pollinator Conservation page at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/chatham/ag/SustAg/pollinatorconservation.html. When you work with your local NRCS office, they will have guidelines for incorporating pollinator habitat into conservation practices, as outlined in Using Farm Bill Programs for Pollinator Conservation, which was in your toolkit, but is also online at http://www.xerces.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/using-farmbill-programs-for-pollinator-conservation.pdf.

If you have any questions or need help with pollinator plantings, Nancy will be very happy to help in any way she can.  Her email contacts are nancy.adamson AT gnb.usda.gov or nancy AT xerces.org and her phone number is 336-370-3443.

The Xerces website is updated regularly (so it’s worth checking back if you haven’t visited recently) and pollinator resources are found at http://www.xerces.org/pollinator-resource-center.  If you click on the mid-Atlantic region, there are links to local pollinator resources, including regional plant lists and seed mixes, more farming for bees information (including organic approaches), regional nurseries with seeds and container plants, and regional guides for bee identification. On the NRCS website, http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/, using the search window to look for “pollinator” or “pollination” pulls up links to the plethora of resources available there and there are webinars on pollinators that you may want to share with other farmers, friends or family available at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/chatham/ag/SustAg/pollinatorconservation.html.

Thank you, again, for the work you do to support bees, other pollinators, and our natural resources!

Sincerely,

Eric Mader, Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation
