Alicia,
I was looking at the beesource plans. The slot for inserting the removable bottom panel comes in handy for monitoring mite drops. Closing off the screen is also required for some treatments like MiteAway. As an alternative, you can simply slide something in the hive on top of the screen to block it off during treatment.
I'll bring an example Thursday night of another simple way to do this.
I think the extra part you are seeing that fully closes off the entrance is actually the back and not the front.
The hardware mesh can sometimes be hard to find around town. Tell me what size you want and I'll bring you a piece.
Cheers,
Lewis

Hello! I am new to beekeeping, I'm taking the class right now. I'm building my first hive, and wonder if anyone can advise me about building a screened bottom board. Can I just build the regular board and cut the center out, attach hardware mesh, and use that?
The beesource website includes other plans that are more complicated, and show a separate slot to insert a second board under the meshed board. It is 3" tall instead of the regular 17/8" bottom boards. Is extra space under there a concern? It also shows inserting extra pieces at the entrance to fully seal it off. It seems overly complicated.
Thanks for your help!
