Gang,
I have a location, it is south facing brick wall, with about strip of
extremely rich soil that is 15 inches wide and about 8-10 inches deep.
There is a volunteer Belle Of Georgia seedling growing there, but I assume
with so little soil and being a likely vigorous tree that any attempt to
espalier that would end in failure (i.e. not enough moisture and room for
root development of a full sized peach.
So I ordered a Gisela 3 cherry from Raintree to plant there, but what I
received did not meet my expectation. I expected a small rooted plant and I
received a rather robustly roots “tree” of a rather large diameter. Normally
I would be happy to receive such a tree, but it turned out not to be suitable
for my purpose (no fault of Raintree – it is a nice tree).
In terms of the volume of soiI I am tempted to use it for apple espaliers
(single U’s) on M27. In my area even after 15 years M27 roots occupy less
than a 1 foot square and 8-10 inches deep root system. So while I think the
trees would grow fine I am concerned about the heat. I cannot imagine
apples like Honey Crisp, Harlson, or Northen Spy developing well on a south
facing brink wall. But then I thought of an apple like GoldRush that want a
long season or Bramley’s that is only marginally hardy in my zone 5a/4b
location (outside of Chicago).
So my questions are as follows, in general can apples handle the heat?
And of the apples listed below, which ones, if any would you think would
favor a southern facing brick wall exposure (the bricks would be about 7
inches from the limbs)?
Thanking you in advance for any assistance you care to afford.
Kindest regards,
The fluffy bunny
