November 2013. Pineapple Guavas in El Sobrante, CA
Eight varieties of pineapple guavas (Feijoa sellowiana) are choice plants in
my garden. They produce ripe fruit anytime between late October into late
November although one year one fruit into January. Fruit is very abundant
and the season is so long that to use them all, you have to leave them on
the neighbors door step at midnight and run. This year was quite unusual in
that one variety fruited in late September when no others did. Now in late
November, I have several others fruiting but one turned out to be a big
surprise.
In the past, three of my plants were seedlings but I took one out because of
poor flavor. One of the other two seedlings had few and very small fruit
with a marginal taste. Like most gardeners with too many things to do, I did
not get around to taking it out. Well, what a big surprise this year when I
discover this fruit shrub/tree had very large fruit (largest of all of
mine), unusually excellent flavor and it was totally overloaded with fruit.
The skin was very soft and sweet enough to eat. The fruit even turned soft
on the tree/bush so I could pick it and eat it immediately instead of
waiting for it to fall then ripen for several days. The change in fruiting
as near as I can tell is that I added a foot high mound of dirt around the
plant (I have very shallow soil-- 3"-18" deep.) then I covered the dirt with
about 4-5 inches of chips. It also turned out to be an excellent seedling
"variety".
Pineapple guavas are a great fruit for a "do-little" gardener like me. They
have no diseases, need no pruning or fertilizer, take some frost, and use
only modest amounts of water. They work well as windbreaks. In the spring,
petals are very large, a lovely pinky color and are as sweet as candy. The
only difficulty is finding named varieties because they are very hard to
graft or start for cuttings. Fortunately for me, the main and maybe only
developer of pineapple guavas in the West lives only about two hours away
from me. He has a large collection, does development work and visits Uruguay
to collect more varieties from the wild. He sells his plants at all the
Northern California scion Exchanges in January into February .
Check out the informative Wilkipedia article at

Please, fruit fans, take ten minutes to write up a short (or long) report of
what's happening at your place in regards to fruit growing: good, bad,
ugly...others will benefit from your experience. Email the write-up to me,
jakuehn@verizon.net, or the gathering editor, Melinda McCuan,
wawo@yahoo.com.
Thanks so much!
