Dear Group,
My location, Terre haute, IN, zone 5b or 6. I've had Rosseyanka since 1992
or 03 and Nikita's Gift (Nikitskaya Bordovaya, the Russian name) since about
1995.
Rosseyanka survived -31 F in about 1997. It ripens very late but is very
winter hardy.
Nikitskaya Bordovaya is not as late, but late. Most of the fruit turns a
nice red but clings to the tree. I usually cut the fruits off the trees the
later part of November. It is more winter hardy than all the kakis I've had
here. Generally, slight damage starts occurring some years at about 0F, but
will still fruit the following summer. The winter when the temps dropped to
-31 all my Nikitskaya Bordovayas were killed except 1. And it was dead to the
graft union which sent out advantageous shoots. If the temps regularly drop
to -10 in your area Nikitskaya Bordovaya would be risky.
Jerry
