Deb,
I do like the Asian pears. From years of watching discussion *here*,
performance varies from place to place.
Chojuro is my favorite - and yes, it takes some fireblight hits - but in my
orchard, they've not been life-threatening; I rarely even bother pruning
'em out.
Shinko & Hosui have performed well here, and I like the fruits.
Niitaka either bears sparsely, or oversets so heavily that the fruits don't
size up(my fault, 'cause I don't thin) - but I don't care for the flavor,
most years.
While Korean Giant is a top performer for many, it was a real dog here -
rarely set more than a handful of fruits - they'd get huge, but be
tasteless, watery things. When fireblight consumed it rapidly one year, I
shed not a tear, and won't replace it.
My original Asians were on Harbin (P.ussuriensis) pear understock, and
they've performed well; later selections are on OHxF 513.
Go for it!
Lucky

Thank you everyone. Lee, I will dig out your book and review that chapter!
Sounds like Asian pears are a good choice for me. I'd like to find
varieties on standard or semi-dwarf rootstock. Space isn't a problem for us
and I've been disappointed by the lack of vigor in trees on dwarfing stock.
Any other Asian pear advice, most welcoe!
