It is actually not specific to paw-paws. Plants in shade need to make more
chlorophyll in
order to make more food for growth. The increased chlorophyll is dark green.
Plants flooded
with light need - and make - less chlorophyll to satisfy their needs -> paler
leaves. (You are
reasoning in anthropomorphic terms - humans get darker in the sun. But
humans don't
photosynthesize).
