The gridling was definately BELOW ground level...~6" below the graft.

If it was just a couple inches of girdling just above the graft union it was
almost certainly meadow voles.

Just picked a ton of sea berries at my friends house-- until it got
too painful! I'll have to wait until my tiny plants are big enough
before I do the cutting off branches method. Does anyone know how to
extract the oil from the berries?
and thanks Jim for the vinegar info-- maybe I'll try seaberry vinegar..
