Not necessary. That's one of the virtues of the plant. I've had one or two
each summer for years.

p.s. as long as we are off-topic: I have a weeping redbud that I planted in
the fall of 2009. It is growing like gangbusters, and I'd like to prune it,
especially the lower portion of it. Any special things I should know about
pruning redbuds? I was thinking of removing everything below 3-4 feet next
spring, and thinning the upper growth for shape. It's awfully full, and
might look better if the branching were sparser.
