I would also suspect that you have mis-labeled plants. I grow both red and
black currants, Jonkheers van Tet, Early Laxton, and Hilltop Baldwin black.
None of my red currents have that black current smell.

I bet you got a mislabeled black currant. I've grown feral seedlings of Red
Lake, and I've grown Red Start and Jonkheers van Tet, and none have had that
distinctive black currant smell.
