Here in New England, if you happen upon a Serviceberry in the woods, it is
most likely Amelanchier Canadensis.
The Moose Jockeys grow Amelanchier Alnifolia of various types.
(Alnifolia means 'has leaves like an Alder')
The 1000 plants I got from BurntRidge were 'Smoky'.
The fruit is usually abundant, but rather bland, and it is a Bird Magnet.
The one unusual and beneficial trait of the fruit it actually the seeds.
They aren't little rocks like blackberry or grapes.
They are actually little nuts; you chew them up, and THEY HAVE PROTEIN IN
THEM !!
The Indians all knew that Pound for Pound, these berries carried them
further......
So, from a Survivalist point of view, Saskatoons stomp all over blueberries
and most others.
