Does kolomikta really grow best in that much shade? Mine have grown well
and, when the new shoots don't freeze, fruited well in full sun for almost 15

when hot summer weather arrives?
Lee,
You can grow kolomikta vines in the full sun, although we've experienced both
leaf and fruit sun scald, and diminishing plant vigor in the heat of the
summer.
We have found they perform better with a few hours of morning sun, or
indirect sun (like the north side of a building), or a full day of filtered
sun of no more than 30%.
The other two key factors provided by shade are moderated lower temperatures
throughout the day, and slightly more humidity.
The best that I have ever seen were in Minter Gardens, British Columbia,
Canada. The vines were in a grotto setting, shaded by trees, on the outside
terrace of a spring fed pool. Spectacular.

Artificial pollination caution:
There is currently a United States import ban.
Pollen can be stored many years under the right conditions.
P.S.A. or kiwifruit canker has spread from Japan-Korea, and France-Italy, and
is now found on both islands of New Zealand. If you have stored pollen with
intentions of using it in the future, there is a possibility it could contain
this disease.
