- Subject: [NAFEX] Prunus virginiana???????
- Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2011 11:53:13 -0600
Re chokecherries, Betsy Hilborn asked: "Do you mean: Prunus virginiana?"
The Latin name of Chokecherry is a subject of contention. Many NAFEXers, et.al., believe it to be Prunus virginiana whereas Britton & Brown, the authors of botanical keys widely recognized by colleges and universities recognize P. virginia as the American Wild (or Red) Plum. Further, the plant we call "Chokecherry," is given the name Padus nana by Britton and Brown and Padus virginiana is Wild Black Cherry.
What botanical key(s) does NAFEX use?
