Hummers prefer blossoms with some throat and nectar: honeysuckle is a prime example. When I lived in Salinas, CA (just inland from Monterey Bay) our cotoneaster shrubs supported honeysuckle and the Anna's hummingbirds (big, by N. American standards) were constant feeders. Black-chinned and Caliope hummers generally get here (Spokane) before my apples bloom. I've never seen 'em visit the blossoms. I have seen orchard (mason) bees, honey bees, three kinds of bumble bees and hover flies busy at bloom time in the apples and the cherry. Keep an eye out: I've seen more than one bird where it wasn't expected. Do hummingbirds, typically, pollinate these Rosaceae pomes: Apple, hawthorn, serviceberry/Juneberry, cherry, and/or plum (non-ornamental Prunus spp.)? I've seen very few photos of this; I wonder if they try to extract nectar but then just end up moving on? I figured this would be the best place to find out - since many here have orchards with plenty of these in it and would therefore know.
