I have been interested in this topic too and did a search and can direct
you to where the answer is given. The basic idea is that there was a
problem with the original patent and it was reissued with the correction.
Here is the link to the information:
http://tinyurl.com/patentreissue Find the section that says “Correction of
Patents”. You will note that it doesn’t make the patent last any
longer. One of my older books says that the original number was 3134 and
if you do a search on it you will get a date it was issued but no text.
You have to use re in front of the number instead of the pp then it will come up
again with no text but has an issue date.

Subject: [NAFEX] Prima apple plant patent question By all rights it seems that Prima's patent (issued in the '80s) should have
run out by now, but I was surprised to see on the Purdue site that they say the
patent has been re-issued. Only thing is that when I tried typing
their new number in to the US Patent and Trademark Office site, I got a message
saying that no such number exists. Does anyone out there know if it is
possible to renew plant patents?
Thanks.
