Maples, Birches and Black Walnuts are known to be spring bleeders. They should be pruned in the mid summer to avoid excessive sap run. Aparently, the spring bleeding of sap does not do much harm to the tree - but it does look unsightly.

Look at maples, cut off a large limb and it will rot from the wound inward. Persimmon also will rot.
