As I understand it, there can be incompatibilty issues with some apple strains and certain rootstocks. Perhaps (and this is just a city guy new to this arena) where such a concern is known with one parent of a cross, it behooves the researcher to see if compatibilty is retained via the other parent of that cross.
No thanks, I'm not in the market for the deed to the Brooklyn bridge.
