I use plastic spiral wrap on my trees. I put it on in Late Fall and take it off after the snow melts. I used to have lots of rodent damage but, since I began using the wrap, I've had zero problems since. It takes only seconds to put on/take off but just be sure to fit it all the way down to the soil and protrude above the estimated snow-line.
