Andrew,
If you have Himalayan blackberries, the canes will get much taller and reproduce as the tips of trailing canes hit the ground. An escape from garden plants imported in 1885, it is considered a noxious weed in the Pacific Northwest. What part of the country are you in?
A good description and history from a professor at Oregon State University can be found at:
<http://www.ars-grin.gov/ars/PacWest/Corvallis/ncgr/cool/rub.aliens.html>
News from California is at:

A noxious weed alert from King County, Washington, is at:
<http://www.kingcounty.gov/environment/animalsAndPlants/noxious-weeds/weed-identification/blackberry.aspx>
I fight it continually on my property.

Can anyone suggest a good reference for Wild Brambles? I'd like to
identify what I've got (red, black, etc.) before fruiting. I cleared
out a bunch of speckled alder last year, mowed the newly cleared ground
with a rotary style mower (DR) and this year the Brambles are having a
field day. First year canes 6' tall! The cleared area is along a field
that was being encroached and there were brambles in the border area. I
seem to inadvertently done just what they wanted!
I saw 3 wild turkey hens near the brambles yesterday. And to think I
spent time (and money) planting six Heritage this spring.
