Nearly all trees cycle nutrients from the subsoil up into the humus layer. Some are better than others at doing this. Obviously,  shallow-rooted, trees will not bring nutrients up from as deep. Nettles (also good for linen production) dandelions and comfrey also play similar roles in open areas.

Doug, you referred to the "nutrient pump role" of poplar and box elder. 
Could you speak more about this?  Do these trees cycle nutrients into
the soil for other plants?
