Your saved chestnuts may not be good. They dry out and die if not packed in something moist. Chestnuts in Nature often germinate in the fall, put down a taproot, then sit until spring before putting up a top. Plant fresh nuts on their sides so about half the nut is above the soil. The root comes out the pointed end and goes into the soil. The top emerges later.
