Hallo Sam,

very interesting and thank you very much!

At China are companies which are producing more than 1000t of Ginkgo "nuts" per year and 4000t of leaves.
Ernie Grimo (Canada) is selling Ginkgoes for "nut-production" he is going to sell also self fertile Ginkgoes.

The following photo, data and legend are just examples from Mr. Jimmy Shen's (China) large collection:

In China there are more than 500 ginkgo trees over 1,000 years old.

Most of them are female, because folks preferred female trees for their

seeds. Some remarkable trees are listed below:

A Chinese Wolfberry Grows on an Old Ginkgo Tree
At a crossroads in Beiqiao, a town of Minghang district, Shanghai, there stands a tall 400 year old ginkgo tree. Every autumn in its southeastern branches, one may spot clusters of red Chinese wolfberry seeds.
Legend tells that long ago, on the location beside the old ginkgo tree, there was the famous Mingxin temple, consisted of thousands of rooms. One year a notorious monk seized power. He raped women, killed the innocent, and ruined the good reputation of the temple. The locals went into a rage and set fire in the temple. As it burned, the fire gradually reached the ginkgo tree igniting some of its branches.
Seeing that the tree was in danger, a young monk kneeled down on the ground to pray for the tree. Suddenly a colorful bird flew over, circled for a while, then settled on the little boy’s head and asked, “Are you determined to save the tree?”
The monk begged, “I would do anything to save it since this tree was planted by the beloved first master Xizui, and now the fire will destroy it”.
“Are you willing to sacrifice your head to save the tree?” asked the bird.
Hearing this, the monk put his palms together, murmured a text of scripture, then put his hands over his head and prepared to have his head removed. The bird pecked the top of his head three times. All at once the little monk disappeared. The bird flew to the tree; pecked one southeastern branch and flew away. Suddenly, a dark rain cloud appeared, drenched the tree and put out the fire.
The next morning greenery appeared on the bird pecked branch. It grew quickly and soon appeared as a Chinese wolfberry with round leaves and yellow flowers. Its root merged with that branch and looked as if it grew naturally from there. Its attractive bunches of smooth red seeds ripened in autumn.
They said that the colorful bird was the transformed spirit of master Xizui. He saw that the boy monk was kind-hearted and self-sacrificing, and as a reward, he absorbed the boy’s soul into the tree, allowing him live forever.

Some time ago there were some posts about ginko nuts and how to prepare them.  Here's a story that goes into detail on that very subject. -- Sam Brungardt, St. Paul, Minn.
