- Subject: [NAFEX] Update on mandarin orange activity
- Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2008 12:41:13 -0400
Hi all. I have several mandarin orange trees in pots (zone 6b) and
bring them in for the winter. They are on alternate bearing schedules. I
have one that has lots of big fruits on it that are just starting to
turn orange (tree is still outside--we haven't gone below mid-40s yet).
The curious thing is that it flowered and fruited and then flowered
again--while that is not unusual, the second round of flowers also
produced fruit. The time period was about 1-2 months apart from the
first flower/fruit development.
Obviously I will be bringing the tree in, but am curious if anyone has
had a citrus that has 2 distinct sets of fruit from 2 distinct blooms.
I wonder if the 2nd set will be as large as the first. I would assume
the 2nd set will ripen properly as I have had to bring the tree in other
years when the temps dipped early and the fruit was still green and
ripened inside (fruit was sweet and good.
Thoughts? Barbara
