Michael is correct as to the genetic characteristics of some plums such as European plums but Japanese hybrid plums sometimes contain 4 or 5 species in their breeding and can be very diverse genetically. So if you have a European plum seed and want to try to propagate it you have a good chance of getting something like the parent/s. On the other hand if you have a 'Japanese' plum you could wind up with something that might not be desirable.
