I should say I tried the painted rocks trick for my strawberries and the birds were not fooled, alas. They were pretty convincing I thought, I grabbed for those rocks I don't know how many times when I was picking berries. It probably depends on what type of birds you have.
The birds are now pecking at my Santa Rosa plums and it is making me a bigger fan of yellow plum varieties, which they have been almost completely ignoring. Putting footies on the pluots completely fooled them, making the fruits tan and not red.
