Hallo Sam,
very interesting!

Clothianidin    Poncho®, Poncho®Beta, Prosper® ... from Bayer Crop Science killed only 11.500 bee hives/colonies at the German State Baden-Württemberg and Bayer Crop Science is going to pay a compensation to the concerned beekeepers. Probably nothing for the killed Wild Bees, Bumble Bees and other insects...
Clothianidin is the fouth best-seller (360 Million US$) from Bayer Crop Science and they are happy to pay some peanuts to some German beekeepers only - to go ahead in selling this insecticide - worldwide.
Since May 2008 Germany banned 8 seed-treating chemicals - 6 containing Clothianidin or the similar Thiamethoxam.
The French Government - Comite Scientifique et Technique - proved additionally that the Bayer best-seller Imidacloprid (900 Million US$ per year) ( Admire, Confidor, Connect, Evidence, Gaucho, Leverage, Lizetan, Muralla, Provado und Trimax and other names) is also responsible for the Bee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).

Hallo Jim and hallo Doug,
your Red Elderberry and Kazakhstan apples information has been also very interesting and new for me!

ciao
Hans

Germany and France Ban Pesticides Linked To Bee Deaths; Geneticist Urges U.S. Ban        In light of recent European bans of a pesticide linked to Bee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), at least one key bee expert is calling for a ban of the same pesticide in the United States.  "In the United States, drastic action is needed," says Canadian geneticist Joe Cummins   (see http://www.enn.com/wildlife/article/37493)
