The Old Home I have is grafted on Crataegus douglasii. That species was tested as a semi-dwarfing stock by Dr. Mel Westwood some years ago. It works well except that it suckers too much when the soil is cultivated (that cuts shallow roots, which send up suckers). Bartlett and Fall Butter pears are about 15 feet high on that hawthorn, while the Old Home is more than double that height.

"The most vigorous" on what rootstock? And how much does the rootstock vigor affect

Old Home is extremely vigorous and resistant to fire blight. It
doesn't have very high flavor, but it's not gritty. At least that's
the way mine has been. It's also graft compatible on hawthorn.

Hello all:

What are the most vigorous pear cultivars? Are any of them resistant to
fire blight? I plan to graft a bunch of pears this spring.

So far, the most vigorous cultivars I have are Devoe, Bon Chretin
d'Hiver, Potomac and, maybe, Ya Li.
