The problem with sweet cherries is probably the
rootstock. Mahaleb seems to do ok with sour cherry but sweet cherries tend
to die on it. Commercial nurserymen prefer to use it, and even commercial
growers prefer to buy trees on it because it has some dwarfing effect, but the
trees are much shorter lived. Mahaleb seems to be the reason that sweet
cherries have a reputation for not liking clay soils. I have sweet
cherries on their own roots, taken as sprouts from own root trees, and they grow
fine in acid red clay. See if you can find sweet cherry on
