Thanks for the advice Steve,

Maybe if you win you could send the prize my way since you grow your own!  Just kidding.  My suggestion was "Sweet Sire."  I'm not holding my breath for either of our entries to win.  Maybe we could combine our creative skills and send an entry "Ugly Sire."  Now that's a name for an apple!

MN447 is one of my favorite apples--It does not taste particularly 'appley' more of a rich exotic aromatic flavor.  The tree grows easily.  It seems more disease resistant than most.  It is small and unattractive. (My suggestion for the U of MN naming contest was 'ugly duckling'.  You know, a 'swanful' of flavor in every bite.)  447 keeps very well and increases its flavor during cold storage.  The major commercial flaw (and I mean major) of the apple is that it cracks around the stem end if the water supply is uneven.  I've had 3/4 or more of the crop hit this way.  As long as you store the cracked apples dry and unwached after the cracks have 'callused' over they still store pretty well--till spring with shriveling.  If you wash the apples and put them away wet they are more sensitive to rotting at the crack point.

MN 447---go for it.

University of MN also says MN447 is the parent of Sweet Sixteen and grandparent of Honeycrisp.  Interesting.   I guess they're supposed to "officially" release 447 after they decide a name for it.  They've been running a contest to do it.  Winner (the one who submits the name they decide to use) gets a bushel of MN447 apples.

I wonder how well 447 does in warmer climates?

Several years ago, I did some genetic "fingerprinting" of a number of U of Minnesota apples, including MN447.  From the genetic data, MN447 and Northern Spy are parents of Keepsake, a popular U of M introduction.  There were old reports that MN447 was derived from open-pollinated Malinda, but the genetic data do not support this.

Fedco trees lists an interesting MN 477 apple.  Anyone familiar with this apple?  Opinions on flavor, growth habits, and suggested pollinators would be welcome.
