Yeah, I thought the timing was odd, too. The
original e-request info said that they (Corvallis, evidently, not Cornwallis as
I'd written) shipped late summer. It was 20F the day they arrived--I got
an e-mail the day before telling me they were coming. I suppose if I'd
been out of town i woouldn't be so pleased with the 'customer service'. There
were two six foot runners, each with four plantlets. Ya only get
two runners per request. I suspect that the total # of
plantlets depends on how many requests there are for a particular variety.
The plants came with a printout of the list of viruses it'd been tested for--all
the tests were negative. Apparently most of the clones have been heat
treated to remove viruses. I imagine that strawberries would be among the
easier plants to de-virus---fast growing and small. The plants are kept in
screen houses to exclude insect vectors.
To Ginda and Rivka--I'm not a plant-seller-guy so
they won't be on the market through my efforts. As always, I am happy to
pass anything I have along to other NAFEXers. I'm sure I'll have extra
'Fairfax' material next summer. Contact me off list if you want a plant or
two.

strawberry plant source
Steve, Good story, though it seems like an odd time to be
shipping strawberry plants to Lone Rock, WI. How many could you request, and
how many did they send you? Thanks, Richard Gouldsboro, ME Zone

P.S. I think it was Kevin Mathews (aka The Fluffy Bunny) who waxed
nostalgic regarding Fairfax. Good luck with them. On Nov 28, 2007, at 7:17

Check with the germplasm

'Fairfax' strawberry that I requested from them via e-mail last
spring. No cost whatsoever and they were Fed-Exed overnight to my
door. Good work USDA!! (I don't have cause to praise them too
often.) I stuck 'em in pots--should be no trouble--roots were already
forming./smaller>/fontfamily> Steve

Thanks to whoever suggested Fairfax. It's is one of the parents of
Sparkle--my favorite commonly available berry and it's supposed to be even
better. It's supposed to grow well in (part?) shade--which is
something I can always use./smaller>/fontfamily>

[NAFEX] mara de bois strawberry plant
source/x-tad-bigger>/fontfamily>
Does anyone know of a
source for plants of Mara des Bois or any of the premium
strawberries? I grow a lot of low chill fruits and have grown
strawberries for years-I read about these in CRFG and wanted to try
them. thanks, Louis
