- Subject: [NAFEX] pH affects of urine

Jim, I have often read that the acidification of urea application is fairly
substantial and a significant factor in apple production in acidic
soils. It wouldn't surprise me if urine has neutralizing minerals to
counter the urea (horse stable waste comprised of urine-soaked pine shavings
composts out to a pH in the mid sixes) but urea by itself is consistantly
attributed to being acidifying.
Are you aware of any specific chemical analysis of human urine in this
regard? I have used my own urine as a fertilizer for years with great
success but I don't have to worry too much about pH in my slightly acid
soil. I heat with wood and use the hardwood ashes to keep my soil in a
productive range. |
